Through bringing ‘Not A Statistic Northeast’ sessions to Sunderland we hoped we could provide safe spaces for people to openly discuss their Mental Health problems, What we actually did was provide those safe spaces for people to connect and create a community for them and others to share their stories and progress in combating the reason that brought them to our sessions in the first instance. From problems with Ex's, or the loss of loved ones or anxiety in making friends to all of the above.
“Sometimes we can only find our true direction when we let the
wind of change carry us.” —Mimi Novic
We at ‘Not A Statistic NE’ have surpassed even our earliest expectations of what we could provide, and you best believe we have just started. “Mighty Oaks from little acorns grow” and all that.
We are determined to provide more safe spaces for people to connect and experience the power of being part of our sessions. to quote one attendee. "Isn't it mad how happy we all are compared to when we all met for the first time."
Often people forget that most problems can't be fixed by a cup of tea and some posh biscuits. But try and tell me when it's free to boot it doesn't lighten your mood a little bit. And that's the real secret of ‘Not A Statistic NE’ we can't fix every problem, but we'll happily help you plan, we will be in your corner till the problem resolves and long after it’s a distant memory.
This sounds a lot more like a mission statement than I'm comfortable with so how about we give you some feedback our participants have given us over the past year. Apologies in advance, there are quite a few requests for strippers. Thanks Dave ;)
Over 5 weeks we carried out anonymous exit surveys from attendees at our sessions at The Beacon. These insights help us improve, adapt, and ensure we’re providing the best possible support. Here’s what we learned:
How easy was it to find our session?
✅ 76% of respondents said it was easy to find us.
⚠️ 24% found it difficult—mainly on a night when a Gala event forced us to use an alternative entrance.
👉 Action: To prevent confusion, we’ve decided to cancel sessions on nights when large events or Gala nights are happening at The Beacon, similar to our matchday cancellations.
Did tonight meet your expectations?
❌ 16% said no, but unfortunately, we didn’t include a follow-up question to understand why.
👉 Action: Moving forward, we’ll be checking in more regularly with attendees to ensure we’re meeting expectations and capturing constructive feedback.
Would you recommend attending one of our sessions?
🎉 100% of respondents said YES! Even among those whose expectations weren’t fully met, everyone would still recommend our sessions. That’s a huge win!
Is there anything we could do differently?
From "Strippers" (we’ll take that as a joke! 😆) to "Can the lighting be adjusted? It’s too bright," we received a mix of responses. Shoutout to Leanne—someone specifically mentioned she did a fantastic job setting up the tables!
💡 60% of respondents said “nothing” or “no changes.” We’ll take that as a win, but we’re always striving to improve!
Recently, we asked attendees to complete a short survey. While we only had three respondents, their feedback still paints a powerful picture of what our peer support sessions mean to them.
How often do you attend our support group sessions?
✅ All three attend weekly and have been with us for over a year. This tells us that our sessions aren’t just meetings, they’ve become a part of their routine, just as they’ve become a part of ours.
What do you find most valuable about our peer support sessions?
💬 “I like the dynamic. How relaxed it is and how Owen and Shane bounce off each other.”
💬 “Being able to talk about similar things and just...”(The person didn’t complete this comment. 🙁)
💬 “Meeting new people and sharing our stories.”
Still don’t know who said this about Owen but, he’s going to get a big head like!
How have our peer support group sessions impacted your life?
💙 "I’m still here."
💙 "Makes me feel I don't always have to put on a brave face."
💙 "It has given me the drive to move forward with my life and keep my head where my feet are."
These responses are everything we strive for at Not A Statistic Northeast CIC. If we can help just one person, that’s enough—but what if we can help thousands?
That’s our mission. That’s why we keep going.
We would like to thank every single person who attended our sessions and a special shout out to the people who doubted us. Eat those apples b@#£h.

In Sunderland, Durham, and County Durham, businesses are the backbone of our local economy. But beyond generating revenue and providing jobs, businesses have the power to create lasting, meaningful change in the communities they are part of. One of the most impactful ways to do this is by supporting Community Interest Companies (CICs) like Not A Statistic Northeast CIC.
What is a Community Interest Company (CIC)?
A CIC is a special type of social enterprise that exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. At Not A Statistic Northeast CIC, we are dedicated to providing accessible mental health support through peer-led initiatives, helping individuals facing long NHS waiting lists and mental health challenges.
Why did we form Not A Statistic Northeast CIC as a CIC?
Our mission is simple: reduce social isolation, prevent suicide, and build stronger communities. Inclusivity is one of our founding values. and we firmly believe that gender, race, religion and economic position are irrelevant when it comes to the support we provide.
We are here for everyone, ensuring that every person who walks through our doors feels seen, heard, and valued.
The Power of Business and CIC Collaboration
When local businesses support CICs financially, they are directly contributing to a stronger, healthier community. But beyond the social good, there are tangible business benefits as well:
Stronger Community Ties – Customers increasingly support businesses that give back. Aligning with a CIC builds goodwill and fosters deeper customer loyalty.
Enhanced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – Many businesses are now required to demonstrate CSR initiatives. Supporting a CIC is a powerful way to show real commitment to social impact.
Workforce Wellbeing – Mental health is a growing concern in workplaces. Partnering with a mental health-focused CIC can provide valuable resources for your own employees. And often opens the door for their employees to have safe conversations about mental health.
Brand Visibility – Sponsoring or funding a CIC initiative means your business gets positive exposure across multiple platforms, showcasing your role as a community champion and proving that your business values the community around them.
Our Story: Not A Statistic Northeast CIC
Not A Statistic Northeast CIC was born from lived experience. We saw and experienced firsthand the devastating impact of mental health struggles and the barriers to accessing timely support. From that experience, we created a peer-led initiative that has now supported hundreds of people across the region, providing a safe space for connection, understanding, and healing.
So far in 2025, we have held 13 peer support sessions in just the first two months, delivering over 140 hours of fully funded mental health support at no cost to attendees. This means that individuals in need can access critical help without the burden of financial stress, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and partners.
We’ve witnessed powerful transformations—people who felt completely alone finding a sense of belonging, individuals on the brink rediscovering hope, and entire families benefiting from the support their loved ones receive. These aren’t just numbers; they are real lives changed because of community-driven support.
As our Founder, Shane Knox, puts it: "We started Not A Statistic Northeast CIC because we saw too many people falling through the cracks. Businesses have an opportunity to be part of the solution, ensuring that mental health support is accessible to everyone who needs it. Your support can truly change lives. In the beginning we thought if we can just help one person but, what if we can help thousands."
How Your Business Can Get Involved
We are actively seeking partnerships with businesses that share our vision of a healthier, more connected community. Your support can help us scale our impact even further. Our initial goal at the end of 2024 was to maintain two weekly venues, providing 1,000 hours of support at no cost. But with the right support, we want to exceed this and expand to five weekly venues, delivering 1,700 hours of fully funded mental health support in 2025 and >2,600 hours by the end of 2026.
By working together, we can make this ambitious goal a reality—offering more people access to critical mental health services and reducing social isolation within our communities.
If you want to explore how we can work together to improve our communities while also benefiting your business, let’s talk. Reach out to us today and be part of something truly transformational.
Together, we can ensure that no one in our communities face their challenges with nowhere to turn, creating safe spaces for strong lives.
We encourage you to connect with us through our contact form for any inquiries, support requests, or opportunities for collaboration.
At Not A Statistic Northeast, we value your feedback and welcome your thoughts. We are eager to engage with community members and stakeholders who share our vision for a brighter future, filled with hope and support for those impacted by mental health challenges and disabilities.
Your voice matters to us, and together we can create impactful change.
At Not A Statistic Northeast, we believe that mental health support should be accessible to everyone, without unnecessary barriers. While some organizations are tightening restrictions on who can access their services, we remain committed to an open-door approach—because struggles don’t fit into neat boxes, and neither should support. Whether you’re facing anxiety, grief, isolation, or just need a space to talk, you are welcome here. Mental health doesn’t discriminate, and neither do we.
